In the morning, at the scheduled time (around 7:00 AM), our guide with transport will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the main port, where you will board a speedboat to visit the exclusive floating islands of Uros and Taquile, located 6 km from Puno. The Uros people were one of the oldest cultures to inhabit Lake Titicaca and used a water plant called totora to create floating islands. The dense roots of these plants support the islands. The residents use totora to build their islands, homes, and cooking areas. The Uru culture emerged over 3,000 years ago, originally speaking the Uro-Puquina language; today, the Uros speak Aymara, a language even older than the Incas. There are 90 artificial islands, and totora rafts are the only means of transport.
Next, we will visit Taquile Island, located in the main lake, 37 km from Puno, formerly called “Intiqa Island.” Upon arrival, we will take a 40-minute walk, enjoying the scenic views of Lake Titicaca and the Andean mountains. Taquile is famous for its artisanal production, especially its beautiful textiles. It is also remarkable that Inca moral principles such as Ama Llulla (do not lie), Ama Q’ella (do not be idle), and Ama Sua (do not steal) are still practiced and upheld by the locals. Today, Taquile Island is home to approximately 2,000 inhabitants.
On Taquile, we will pause to enjoy a delicious lunch at a typical island restaurant, featuring dishes prepared with fresh Lake Titicaca fish.
